‘Beyond Utopia’ is a gripping documentary that delves into the perilous journeys of North Korean defectors escaping one of the world’s most repressive regimes. The film follows a mother’s desperate quest to reunite with her child, a family of five navigating treacherous paths across the Yalu River into China, and a South Korean pastor risking his safety to assist them. Through real-time accounts and vivid storytelling, Madeleine Gavin exposes the harsh realities of fleeing North Korea versus the regime's false paradise, offering a poignant and urgent look at the courage and sacrifice involved in the search for freedom.
The screenings of the film will be accompanied by the special exhibition by Korean artist Kang Chun-hyuk 'Freedom in the Frozen Land' at Cinema House open to all visitors after the film premiere and a discussion with characters from the film. The events are presented in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.
