I AM NOT EVERYTHING I WANT TO BE
Klára Tasovská, Lukáš Kokeš / 2024 / 90' / Czech Republic
In 1968 Czechoslovakia, then 16-year-old photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková, known as the Soviet Nan Goldin, defies the Soviet regime's oppressive 'normalisation' with her rebellious spirit and a black-and-white camera. Rejected from art school for not being 'working class' enough, she finds solace and inspiration among Prague’s misfits—factory workers, Roma outcasts, Vietnamese migrants, and LGBTQ+ denizens of the T-Club. As she navigates a turbulent life of drunken escapades and identity crises, Libuše documents her journey with striking photos and poignant diary entries, spanning from Czechoslovakia to Berlin to Tokyo. ‘I’m Not Everything I Want to Be’ is a vivid exploration of art as a sanctuary and catalyser of freedom and self-discovery.
