HOME SWEET HOME
Annika Mayer / 2023 / 67' / Germany
A remarkable film about the invisibility of domestic violence, where the filmmaker uncovers hidden truths while interviewing her grandmother about old family Super8 recordings from the 50s and 60s. These films capture a seemingly idyllic family life during Germany's "Economic Miracle": a fancy house, vacations, and garden trips, reflecting the social expectations of the era. Yet, behind the facade, fragments of darker memories emerge. The film exposes the gap between appearance and reality, as Rose's narration gradually dismantles the image of post-war West German family happiness, making the invisible visible.
