SILENCE OF REASON

Kumjana Novakova / 2023 / 63' / Bosnia and Herzegovina & North Macedonia

‘Silence of Reason’ is a powerful forensic video essay exploring sexual violence during the Bosnian War. Centered around the first international tribunal to recognise rape as torture and sexual enslavement as a crime against humanity, the film combines visual archives with survivor testimonies to reconstruct the atrocity in a visually innovative manner. Haunting footage of ravaged locations and unfiltered accounts from women in the Foča rape camps create a vivid portrait of trauma. ‘Silence of Reason’  serves as a memorial and a reflection on memory, presenting these women's experiences as both deeply personal and universally resonant.
