NEW NEWS FROM ANOTHER HOME

Borjana Ventzislavova 2024 / 86' / United States, Bulgaria

Inspired by Chantal Akerman’s 'News From Home' (1976) - the filmmaker and artist Borjana Ventzislavova (b. 1976) finds herself in Manhattan, haunted by the idea to visit all locations in Akerman’s opus and capture the changes in the city for the period of her current lifetime. The narration is based on her reading the emails she exchanged during her stay in New York with her mother, a woman in her 80s who has spent most of her life in Bulgaria: behind the Iron Curtain, through the Transition Period and into the European Union. Far from her child in Austria and her mother in Bulgaria, far from her two hometowns — Vienna and Sofia — Ventzislavova revisits her own mother-daughter relationship and the given political structures, and examines the resulting societal conditions, family stories and traumas. 'News From Home'  opens a 20th century time capsule, and creates a new one, in which the zeitgeist is revealed through personal life fragments.
