RIEFENSTAHL
Andres Veiel / 2024 / 115' / Germany
Riefenstahl explores the life and legacy of Leni Riefenstahl – one of the most controversial figures of the 20th century. Through personal archives – films, photographs, letters, and recordings – the film traces her rise as the leading filmmaker of the Third Reich, while she persistently denied any close ties to Hitler and Goebbels. Her aesthetic – celebrating strength and perfection – continues to influence to this day. But has the ideology behind it returned as well? The film raises this unsettling question, as her private documents reveal how postwar Germans longed for a strong hand and a new order – believing her art would rise again with it.
